Detailed Itinerary
Day 1: Nairobi to Masai Mara
You will meet your Kenyan safari guide at the hotel for pick up. Set off on a picturesque drive to Maasai Mara National Reserve in Narok County, Southwestern Kenya. The 5-6 hours’ road trip to Masai Mara Reserve comes with breathtaking view of the Great Rift Valley. Arrive early, and settle for lunch break at the safari lodge/camp in Masai Mara.
After lunch, relax and then exit the lodge for an afternoon game drive through the splendid savannas of Masai Mara Reserve. This unforgettable wildlife tour in the afternoon offers you a chance to see diversity of wildlife including elephants, leopards, lions, wildebeest, cheetahs, antelopes, and birds. By 6:00pm, you will be at your respective accommodation for dinner and night stay.
Day 2: Full day expedition in Masai Mara – Kenya
Have a delicious breakfast in the morning and after, set off from your camp/lodge for a full-day wildlife tour in Masai Mara National Reserve Kenya. Possible sightings of the day will include big 5 game; observe the wildebeest migration, antelopes, giraffes, zebras, cheetahs and more.
After the morning game viewing session, you have a bush lunch and proceed with an afternoon game drive to see more wildlife. If time permits, you will pay a visit in the Maasai community and later, get back to the lodge for relaxation.
Day 3: Masai Mara to Kilimanjaro Mountain, Tanzania
Leave the camp/lodge and today, you will be transferred to Mount Kilimanjaro in Tanzania. Take a flight to Kilimanjaro International Airport; meet the driver guide for transfer to the lodge for relaxation and briefing about your hiking expedition. Mt. Kilimanjaro is a free-standing volcano, rising up to the height of 5895 meters and comprises of 3 volcanic cones –Kibo, Shira and Mawenzi.
Day 4: Drive from Arusha to Forest Camp
Depart Arusha for 3 to 4 hours’ drive to Lemosho trail. You will report at Londorossi gate early enough for a briefing from the park official about your hiking expedition. Lemosho route allows you explore Mt. Kilimanjaro from the western side, and it is considered to be the most beautiful routes. Start hiking with the lead of experienced guides and you will be spotting some wildlife
Day 5: Hike to Shira 1 Camp
Arise early morning for breakfast and after, start ascending via the podocarpus and juniper forest till you get to Shira Plateau –expecting to take 5-6 hours. Have lunch en-route and proceed to the camp arriving around midafternoon. At this point, you will be enjoying the spectacular view of the Kibo peak.
Day 6: Moir Hut
Depart Shira Plateau for 3 to 4 hike, crossing the moorland meadows and settle for lunch as directed by your guide. From the lunch point, ascend to Moir Camp and get there early around midafternoon. For hikers who still have the energy, they can proceed with the trek in the surrounding Lent Hills.
Day 7: Barranco Camp
Leave Moir Camp for 7km trek through the Kibo slopes. This is an area where you can find fewer faunal/floral species considering the extreme temperature rise. You will have a delicious meal near the volcanic rock formation, also best referred to as the Lava Tower. Hikers who still have the energy can embark on ascent of about 300 foot tall lava tower prior descending down to Barranco camp. Navigate via the unique ‘Garden of the Senecio’ also referred to as giant groundsel. The Barranco Valley is one of the most spectacular places in this hiking trail.
Day 8: Karanga Camp
After breakfast, you will have a short day walk to Karanga Camp. To get to the summits of Karanga Valley, you may have to make best use of your 4 limbs. At Karanga Valley, take the path that joins different inclines and declines to Karanga camp. Get to the camp in the afternoon, relax and you will be viewing the surrounding areas including the glacial valleys and ice fields.
Day 9: Barafu Camp
Set off from Karanga camp for 7 to 8 hours hike and descend for 4 to 6 hours. The half an hour’s trek will lead you to Barafu camp where you will enjoy lunch, relax before you proceed to the summits for an evening spectacular view of Mawenzi peak.
Day 10: Hike to Mweka Camp
Enjoy an early morning breakfast and after, embark on 3-4 hours hike to the coldest and windiest summits of Kilimanjaro. Arrive at the Stella Point to enjoy view of the Mwenzi peak and later, proceed to Uhuru peak. At this summit, take as many photos as you can at this Africa’s highest mountain. After, you will proceed towards the Mweka Camp for relaxation and a night stay.
Day 11: Mweka Camp back to Arusha
Enjoy breakfast and after, you will be descending through the montane forest and by midday, you will assemble at the briefing point. After the 4 to 7 hours marks the end of your expedition in 11 Days Masai Mara and Kilimanjaro.
