The best time to watch the wildebeest migration depends on changes in the weather. These animals respond differently to each season.
January to March
During these months, dry conditions push the wildebeests to settle in the Ndutu Plains in the southeast of Serengeti National Park, inside the Ngorongoro Conservation Area. This is not a permanent home but a safe place for calving.
Here, they give birth and need plenty of grass to feed their young. Despite many challenges, the mothers protect their calves and stay strong.
March to April
By late March, the long rains begin, raising water levels. This creates new dangers, especially after the wildebeests have given birth to around 8,000 calves. Instead of crossing rivers, the herds move further north, passing through Maswa Game Reserve and spreading east and west.
The rains start to slow down in early April, and the herds begin to scatter as they head toward the Mara River. It can be harder to spot them when they are spread out, but staying near waterholes is a good idea because the animals search for green grass and water. Don’t lose hope—this is still a good time to see them.
June
By June, the herds reach the western Grumeti area, where they cross the swollen Grumeti River. This is a risky time, as many animals, especially the young ones, are caught by crocodiles and other predators waiting at the riverbanks.
Tourists visiting during this period should expect muddy conditions and pack gumboots and rain jackets. It can also be difficult to predict the exact movement of the herds.
July to August
These months are the peak time for river crossings at the Masai Mara. The wildebeests cross the river in groups over several days, along with zebras and gazelles, all searching for food and water.
By late August, most of the wildebeests settle in the Masai Mara National Reserve.
September to October
During these months, the herds break into smaller groups. Some cross the river and stay near the Mara River banks, while others remain in the northern Serengeti.
This leads to smaller crossings between the Kogatende and Lamai areas. Even in the dry season or during short afternoon rains in November and December, some wildebeests keep crossing.
Every month has something different to offer. Any time of the year is a good time to visit and experience the wildebeest migration.
