Cute baby animals, including wildebeests, are born in December as the herds settle in the southern part of Serengeti National Park, where green grass grows thanks to the rains and thunderstorms.
Just like in November, raincoats, jackets, and umbrellas are recommended in December. Don’t forget a first aid kit in case you slip on the muddy ground, and it’s a good idea to pack gumboots if possible.
By the end of December, as the Christmas season approaches, the wildebeests start moving back to the Ndutu region. Some of them are already pregnant and begin their journey before January and February, when they are expected to give birth.
At this time, lions, leopards, and cheetahs are also busy hunting food for their cubs. They stay alert near waterholes, waiting for animals crossing after escaping the hungry crocodiles.
If you are going on safari during this season, it’s wise to pack warm clothes because the nights can get very cold. Bring insect repellent, a hat, and other essentials to stay comfortable.
There are many activities travelers can enjoy, including:
- Camping, where people gather in a specific area and get to meet and interact with others.
- Bird-watching, which attracts photographers who stand at different spots to capture images of the colorful bird species that add beauty to the landscape. Some of the birds you may see include white-faced whistling ducks, fulvous whistling ducks, knob-billed ducks, Egyptian geese, African pygmy geese, guinea fowl, secretary birds, and many more.
- Game drives are done in safari vehicles. Early risers have the best chance of seeing a lot of wildlife because animals are most active in the morning. Those who join the afternoon drives can also spot lions getting ready to hunt, as lions rest during the day—often for around 20 hours—to save energy for nighttime hunting.
- Hot air balloon rides are also a great experience, letting you float above the ground and spot animals hidden in the bushes from a high viewpoint.
Remember, actions speak louder than words. Don’t miss out on the chance to witness the wildebeest migration. Take action and book your safari adventure in Tanzania.
