The wildebeests follow the same path every year, which means their migration can be predicted to some extent. However, it is not possible to know the exact dates because the rains do not start on a fixed day or at a set time. The rains usually stop in late November or early December, allowing the migration to begin.
The migration happens in shifts and groups.
These animals move when there is not enough food to support them all. The first group heads out and settles in the southeastern part of the Serengeti. But this is only temporary, because by April they move again toward areas near the Grumeti River.
The famous river crossing usually takes place in July or August, so visiting Africa in these months is a good way to witness this special event.
Some accommodations where you can stay while waiting for the migration include Serian Nkorombo Mobile Camp, which can be moved from place to place depending on where the migration is expected.
Mara Camp offers hot showers, clean bathrooms with a fresh scent, tasty meals, and comfortable beds, among other things. There is also Dorobo Mobile Camp, located in Naboisho Conservancy, which gives a closer look at wildlife.
Porini Lion Camp is in Olare Motorogi Conservancy, and Sand River Masai Mara is also a great choice, offering a 4-poster bed, good food, and a veranda where you can relax and enjoy the surroundings.
