When you visit southwest Kenya, think of Governors II Moran Camp. It is connected to Lake Victoria’s Northeast Mfangano Island Camp Lodge, Governors Camp Masai Mara, Governors Private Camp Masai Mara, Little Governors Camp Masai Mara, and Sabyinyo Silverback Lodge in the Virunga Mountains.
The camp is located inside the Masai Mara, a beautiful reserve with a great climate and rich wildlife, especially during the migration season when animals move in search of pasture and water.
Access to Governors II Moran Camp is by light aircraft, landing at Governors Airstrip, where a tour guide will meet you with a safari vehicle. The drive to camp takes about fifteen minutes, and all connecting transport is included. These services are available from Nairobi, Mombasa, Diani, Amboseli, Meru, Nanyuki, Naivasha, Laikipia, and the Serengeti.
It’s good to note that from the nearby Musiara Airstrip, you will first cross plains filled with animals before entering the riverine forest where the camp is located.
The first building you’ll see is the reception area, which also has a well-stocked gift shop. If you follow the path to the central lawn, you’ll find an open lounge tent on your left, with tables set up across the grass. No need to ask questions—just sit back and enjoy the sounds of the wildlife around you.
The camp has a long history, first established in 1972 by the Grammaticas family. Since then, they have kept the tradition alive, moving away from the western style of safaris and focusing on authentic experiences. They also employ many local people from nearby communities, showing their commitment to supporting the local area.
Governors Camp has ten tents, each surrounded by a river on both sides. The tents include sturdy natural wood beds, spacious tiled bathrooms, a standby generator, and a restaurant that offers vegetarian and other dietary options if you mention them when booking.
You shouldn’t leave the camp without going on a game drive in a safari vehicle, enjoying a bush meal, or taking a guided bushwalk. There’s always something exciting to experience each day you are here.
Note: Adult supervision is very important, as the camp is unfenced and can be dangerous for children if left alone.
The Masai Mara is easily reached by air from Nairobi, but road transport is also an option for guests who want to make stopovers in local communities. These visits offer a chance to feel the beat of African drums, join in local dances, and play traditional games if time allows.
Book your stay with Governors II Moran Camp—you won’t regret it.
