Rekero Camp is perfectly located to witness the wildebeest’s yearly migration. Guests can watch this amazing event right from the camp, which is why the camp often gets busy during peak times. Tourists are advised to book their stay in advance.
The camp operates from June to March and closes from April to May. It is located in southwestern Kenya, near the Tanzanian border, with a prime spot overlooking the Talek River in Kenya’s Masai Mara National Reserve.
It’s common to hear animals calling, see herbivores grazing, and spot birds like the secretary bird, Grey crowned crane, Lilac-breasted roller, Kori bustard, ostrich, Southern ground hornbill, white-backed vulture, and Tawny eagle.
Rekero Camp has nine large tents, including two family tents. Each tent has an en-suite bathroom, flushing toilet, hot water shower, battery charging facilities, solar power with a backup generator, free laundry service, a dining area, and more.
Watching the migration is a dream for many people. Millions of animals cross the dangerous Mara River in search of grass and water. Many don’t make it—they may die from exhaustion or get stuck in the mud near the river.
Besides facing these dangers, they are also hunted by predators waiting near the shores. Seeing all of this is like watching a real-life adventure.
The best times to see wildlife are early in the morning when animals are looking for food, or in the evening when they return to their shelters. Visiting water holes is also a good opportunity, as many animals gather there to drink.
Tourists can take part in several activities, including:
- Game Drives: Usually, there are two game drives each day. Skilled guides take you to the best spots where animals gather. Game drives are more comfortable than nature walks because safari cars have charging points and mini-fridges to keep your drinks cold.
- Cultural and Community Visits: Many tourists visit the Masai people to listen to their stories and join in their high jump dance. Don’t miss the chance to take photos of their hats and the ornaments they wear.
- Meals & Refreshments: Meals are carefully prepared, and chefs ask about any allergies to make sure you enjoy your food safely. Meals include salads, vegetables, English fry-ups, fresh fruits, tea, and cake, served at different times of the day.
