Hunger is likely the main reason behind the wildebeest migration. Changes in climate play a big role in this process. During the dry season, the green plains turn brown, and waterholes dry up, meaning there is not enough food and water.
This forces the animals to move from Serengeti National Park to Masai Mara National Reserve, crossing the Mara River. But the journey is not easy. Many wildebeests are hunted along the way by lions, leopards, and cheetahs that wait patiently near waterholes.
As grass becomes scarce in one area, the herds move to other places, including the Ndutu Plains, western Grumeti, where they cross the Grumeti River, and eventually Mara.
The migration is especially intense because many wildebeests are pregnant. Calving also pushes them to move in search of fresh grass rich in calcium and magnesium, which helps the mothers produce milk and keeps the young ones healthy once they start eating grass.
The calves are impressive—they can stand and move just minutes after birth and quickly follow their mothers. In these parks, you will also see other herbivores like elephants, giraffes, buffaloes, and rhinos, along with reptiles such as turtles, snakes, lizards, and crocodiles.
Bird lovers can enjoy spotting many colorful species in the wooded areas of both Serengeti and Masai Mara.
These include the lilac-breasted roller, secretary bird, marabou stork, turaco, guinea fowl, common ostrich, saddle-billed stork, bustards, southern ground hornbill, vulture, white-faced whistling duck, Schalow’s turaco, lesser flamingo, yellow-billed stork, bare-faced go-away bird, red-chested cuckoo, greater flamingo, African emerald cuckoo, white-browed coucal, buzzards, and many more.
There are many activities travelers can enjoy during a wildebeest safari. Nature walks are a great way to step into the wild and observe animals up close.
