Wildebeest Migration in October – Herds Return to Serengeti from Masai Mara

Travel this October to Serengeti National Park or Masai Mara National Reserve and witness the wildebeest migration. The herds begin their journey from Masai Mara, eventually crossing into the Serengeti through Loliondo in the east.

Some wildebeests stay in the Masai Mara until the end of the month. October is the peak of the dry season, meaning there is little rainfall.

Even if it rains in the morning, it is usually brief and won’t stop you from enjoying your visit. This is one reason many tourists prefer game drives, as the 4×4 safari vehicles keep them covered and the tours continue without delay.

You can expect to see a variety of wildlife during the wildebeest trek, including crocodiles waiting with open mouths to catch the crossing animals. The river crossing is a difficult part of the journey, and many wildebeests lose their lives.

Surviving the river does not guarantee safety, as lions—often called the kings of the jungle—hunt the herds on land. With so much food available, lions are less likely to fight each other because there is enough to go around.

October, like September, is a great time to visit. While September is known as one of the best months, October has the advantage of being less crowded, offering tourists more privacy while touring the parks.

However, visitors are always reminded to follow certain rules to avoid disturbing the animals. These include:

  • Staying quiet, as noise can scare animals into hiding.
  • Keeping a safe distance during nature walks to avoid attacks and to ensure there is a clear path to retreat if needed.
  • Not littering, as animals may eat plastic or bottles, which can cause suffocation.
  • Never feeding wild animals, as it makes them dependent on humans and can lead to starvation if food is not regularly provided.

Places to stay include Kichakani Serengeti Camp, Serengeti Under Canvas, Serengeti South Camp, Four Seasons Safari Lodge, One Nature Nyaruswiga Camp, Namiri Plains, Grumeti Serengeti Tented Camp, and others.

These accommodations are well-equipped with wireless internet, cupboards with hangers, minibars, laundry services, room service, refrigerators with freezers, clean linen and towels, good ventilation, and many other facilities.

Tourists can enjoy activities such as hot air balloon safaris, nature walks, game drives, and camping. Both private and public camping sites are available.

Come and explore either Kenya or Tanzania this October.
