The wildebeests are busy crossing during the month of June, although the migration doesn’t happen all at once. At first, they stay in the western Serengeti and along the southern banks of the Grumeti River, feeding on the green plants.
As the grass becomes scarce and starts to dry out, they begin moving toward the northern part of the park, along the western edge, where they hope to find fresh grass again.
This move usually takes place at the end of June as July begins. Sadly, many animals lose their lives during this time because predators wait near the Mara River, ready to catch any weak animals they can find.
Some tourists want to be close to the action, so they book camps inside the park to avoid missing anything. These include Sayari Camp and Rekero Camp, among others, where visitors can watch the wildebeests, zebras, and gazelles as they prepare for the big crossing of the Mara River.
There are also hotels nearby, such as Kichakani Serengeti Camp, which has comfortable, stylish tents with en suite bathrooms, set up in both the southern and northern Serengeti.
Serengeti Under Canvas offers nine tents in a private area, each with good ventilation, cozy beds, modern flush toilets, soft towels, custom rugs, and chandeliers that add a nice touch to the space.
Four Seasons Safari Lodge has raised platforms and a watering hole that attracts many animals. Photographers enjoy capturing beautiful moments, including elephants drinking water.
Tourists can join game drives to spot many animals, especially in the morning when most creatures are out looking for food.
Those who prefer a later start can book an afternoon or evening drive. Lion fans also have the chance to see these big cats, which often rest during the day, sleeping up to twenty hours to save their energy for hunting in the evening, when other animals are tired and less alert.
Adventure is available at any time you choose to explore. Nature walks are also popular, where guides teach visitors how to track animals by following their footprints. Walks are done from a safe distance to avoid disturbing the animals or their natural behavior.
This is why making loud noise is not allowed inside the park. Other activities include hot air balloon rides and camping.
Come and discover the wonders of June while watching the peaceful wildebeests in action.
