Wildebeest Migration in September – Best Places to See It in Kenya & Tanzania

Green pastures in September cover the east side of Masai Mara National Reserve. Herds move in that direction in search of food, with many settling in Lamai and Kogatende.

Looking back at August, these animals cross the Mara River, and by September, they are fully settled, searching for areas with enough grass to feed their families.

This period is often considered one of the best times for watching the wildebeest migration, as many animals can be seen, including wildebeests, zebras, lions, leopards, and cheetahs, which mainly hunt the herbivores that are very active during this month.

Every tourist is assigned a knowledgeable tour guide, and often two guides accompany tourists to help locate the best areas to see the wildebeest migration.

Some tourists prefer game drives because they feel safer observing the animals from inside a safari car. Others enjoy exploring on foot, choosing nature walks with armed guides who lead them through the National Reserve, staying alert to spot wildlife activity.

September is also a dry month, with cool mornings and nights but warm afternoons. It is a busy time for tourism, so the area can be crowded. However, this should not discourage you from visiting, as private campsites are available for those who prefer more privacy. Some camping options in the area include:

  • Mara Maisha Camp (which includes a campsite)
  • Mara Explorer Camp
  • Base Camp Masai Mara
  • Mara Bush Camp
  • Entim Camp
  • Ilkeliani Camp
  • Pride Inn Mara Camp
  • Mara Olapa Camp

There are also hotels where tourists can relax after a day of activities such as nature walks or hot air balloon rides. These hotels offer showers, clean water, soft towels, minibars, and restaurants serving a variety of meals. Some also offer bush meals with both local and international dishes. These hotels include:

  • Nomad Lamai Serengeti
  • Kimondo
  • Alex Walker’s Serian
  • Olakira
  • Ubuntu
  • Chaka

Many tourists enjoy not only the wildebeest migration but also other activities such as horse riding in Masai Mara, always guided by a tour guide. Hot air balloon rides are another popular choice for those who prefer a bird’s-eye view of the landscape instead of walking or game drives. Visitors can also meet and interact with the Maasai people, making the adventure even richer.

Life is a wonderful adventure. Visit Masai Mara National Reserve or Serengeti National Park to create new and unforgettable memories.
