The month of March is marked by heavy rainfall, with average temperatures ranging between 28°C and 15°C. The rain helps the grass grow thick and rich in magnesium and calcium, which is important for the female wildebeests as they produce milk for their calves.
The wildebeests move and settle in the wide plains of Ndutu and Kusini Maswa districts, where they give birth to their young. After some time, they begin their journey back home. Just like life itself, their journey is not easy.
Along the way, they face dangers, especially from the crocodiles in the Mara River, which kill many of them. But the wildebeests keep moving until they reach their destination.
Recommended Tourist Activities for March
Here are some of the activities that tourists can enjoy:
Game Drives
This is the most popular activity in Serengeti and Masai Mara National Parks. It is done in vehicles, making it safer than walking tours. Animals usually avoid vehicles, seeing them as large objects they cannot fight or attack, which is why many visitors choose this option.
There is a wide variety of wildlife in these parks, including snakes, lizards, leopards, buffaloes, and of course, wildebeests. Tourists can also see many birds and other animals.
Birds you may spot include the black-headed gonolek, grey-backed fiscal, red-capped robin-chat, ostriches, bustards, secretary birds, silverbird, Rüppell’s vulture, southern ground hornbill, Schalow’s turaco, yellow-throated sandgrouse, starlings, and more. Game drives are available in different time slots: the morning shift starts at 6:30 am, the afternoon shift at 2:00 pm, and the evening shift ends around 6:00 pm.
Nature Walks
Nature walks are for brave tourists who want to explore on foot, keeping a safe distance from lions, leopards, and cheetahs. This activity offers a close look at wildlife and gives visitors a chance to stop and take photos.
Hot Air Balloon Rides
Hot air balloons, powered by fire and wind, offer a special experience, allowing tourists to view the green landscapes where wildebeests graze with their young.
Camping
Camping is a favorite for adventure seekers who want to experience things firsthand. Many tourists book camping sites to feel the ground shake as animals pass by.
The calming sound of bubbling water adds to the peaceful feeling, helping visitors relax and clear their minds.
Come and unwind in comfortable hotels while watching the wildebeest migration in the Serengeti-Mara ecosystem. Remember, even an active mind needs rest.
